March 1, 2010 Bankruptcy basics For starters, “There’s nothing special about attorneys, as far as being creditors in a bankruptcy case,” says Marie L. Nienhuis of Beck, Chaet, Bamberger & Polsky SC in Milwaukee. Lawyers are subject to the automatic stay like every other creditor, and unpaid legal fees are typically treated as unsecured debts in bankruptcy. That means the attorney must file a claim just like any other unsecured creditor — and hope to eventually receive a disbursement. |

Barry Chaet, Esq., President of the law firm Beck, Chaet, Bamberger & Polsky, S.C., has been honored with the 2007 Associate of the Year award by the WIA. The WIA Associate of the Year Award annually recognizes one person who services Wisconsin's lodging industry in an exemplary manner. Chaet currently serves as the WIA's legal counsel and is a member of the association's Board of Directors. Chaet regularly fields legal questions from the WIA's membership base, and advises the association on pressing legal matters that directly impact the industry. In addition to his involvement with the WIA, Chaet sits on the Board of Directors of the Greater Milwaukee Hotel-Motel Association (GMHMA), and is a member of the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys (AHIA), a national organization comprised of attorneys who represent clients and associations in the hospitality industry. For the third consecutive year, Chaet received a Super Lawyer award, as voted by his peers in the Milwaukee area and published in Milwaukee Magazine.
